Antique Oak Desk Chair (1897 1921) Heywood Bros. & Wakefield Co.

The Heywood Bros. & Wakefield Co. logo - H.B. & W. Co. - stamped on
your chair's metal hardware indicates it was made between 1897, when Heywood
Bros. & Co. merged with Wakefield Rattan Co., and 1921 when the firm's name
was changed to Heywood-Wakefield. The renowned American company's furniture,
ranging from airy Victorian wicker to early 20th-century Mission
pieces and sleek modern suites popular from the 1930s through the 1950s, is
highly collectible.

At the turn of the last century, H.B. & W. Co. began developing a line
of attractive, comfortable office furniture that remained popular until the
1930s. Your early swivel chair, also known as a rotary desk chair, is equipped
with a cast-iron appliance that allows it to tilt, swivel and be raised or
lowered.

Antique Heywood Bros. & Wakefield Co. Oak Desk Chair.

This
is a really incredible swivel office chair. The chair has many
adjustments. The contoured back support will adjust up and
down. The back support will also adjust in an arc toward or away from
the seat. The seat height is adjustable by lifting a lever above the 4
star base and turning the seat clockwise to lower the seat or counter clockwise
to raise the seat. When the height adjustment lever is down (nestled into
the notch in the seat post) the seat will rotate around in either direction
without changing the height. Also there is a tension adjuster under
the seat.

This
chair is incredibly solid. The seat and the base are crafted from solid
oak. The seat is quartersawn oak which is comprised of tongue and groove
segments. The base has an iron spider which is held with screws and 4
bolts and keeps the legs tight against the column. The round iron knob for the
back support arc adjustment has "H. B. & W. Co. TW"
embossed, which stands for Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Co.

Please
review the pictures for condition and email with any questions. This used
antique chair has wear commensurate with its age. The leather seat has
scuffs, wear, and spots, with horsehair padding. The cane back is in
fairly good condition. The wood has some finish losses, some bumps, and minor
losses. The metal collar above the base and adjusting knobs have surface rust.

All
measurements given are approximate. The seat measures 15 5/8" wide
and 15" deep. The back support is 12 3/4" wide and 11 1/2"
tall.  The 4 star base measures 22 1/4" across.  The
measurement from front of the chair to the back is 18 1/2".

This
unique chair will make a great addition to your collection.
